Dr. Carola Schimek and team from Berlin, Germany visited the Maaya Cleft Centre in Vishakapatnam, A.P. Dr. Siva Reddy, Centre Director assisted the team in a few surgeries.

The attachment is a travelogue of the visit of Mr. Alexander Gross, CEO, German Cleft Children’s Aid Society, Germany to the Maaya Cleft Centers in India.

The German Cleft Children’s Aid Society is the biggest supporter of Maaya Foundation and also an international partner. Mr. Gross participated at the Indocleftcon 2011 in Chennai, the annual cleft meet in India.

The report is an impression of his visit on the work and care being carried out by Maaya. It also contains the future plans
for the year 2011-12 and the budget.

Veteran Srilankan cricketer Sidath Wettimuny has come forward to support the cause of cleft children in Srilanka. Mr. Sidath Wettimuny, goodwill ambassador of Maaya Foundation will promote the work for cleft children and support the Foundation’s activities internationally.

Maaya Foundation, India’s first and only charity for facial deformities currently runs 10 centres across India and has supported over 4,000 free surgeries.

Gifting a life for the abandoned baby “ Namita”

Like every evening Elias Barla, a Telephone Cable worker in Cuttack, the oldest city of Orissa, India was returning home on his old bicycle after a hard day’s work. It gets gloomy around 6 o’clock in the evening and it is a lonely place.

Elias heard a child crying behind the bushes. At first he thought it was an animal but out of curiosity he got off the cycle and started searching for the source of noise. He was astonished to see a new born baby left in the bush with some old cloths. Nobody was there to help him rescue the baby. Anything could have happened at night. It was very difficult to take the baby on his bicycle so he rushed home to bring his wife.

His wife was kind enough and agreed to support him. They rushed back and his wife examined the baby with a torchlight to check whether the baby is alive and found it was a new born girl baby with a cleft lip deformity. They decided to take her to home.

They brought the girl child home on his bicycle and washed her with warm water and tried to feed her some milk. The following day they took her to the doctor and he told them that the baby also has a cleft palate. Upset n hearing this and eyes rolled with tears they thought that the future is bleak for the child. They then realized that the baby might have been from a very poor family and this facial deformity added gravity to the distress poverty which might have forced her parents to do away with the baby. Although, the baby was very fair she was a cleft baby. As Barla doesn’t have a girl baby except their only 5 year old son, therefore they decided to bring her up as their daughter and named her Namita.

A few months later they visited the nearby Catholic Church. After the mass they visited the Parish Priest for her baptism. The Parish Priest knew contacted Maaya Foundation for help. On consultation with Dr. Sobhan of Maaya Foundation it was suggested that they perform a surgery after 6 months as the child was only 4 months old.

The baby Namita was brought to the Maaya Foundation Cleft Centre in Bubaneshwar the surgery in January 2010 and it was a successful surgery. Barla and his family were very happy to see the beautiful face of their Godsend baby after the surgery. It was a great day of joy for the Barla family. Mr. Elias Barla says: “We really want to convey our gratefulness and thanks to the donors, doctors and organizers without whose support it could have meant hard days for us and our daughter Namita”.

Yet another joyful day for Maaya Foundation and the supporting organization, the German Cleft Children’s Aid Society.

Workshop on Cleft & Craniofacial Anomalies

Maaya Foundation in association with the Centre for Craniofacial Anomalies, Yenepoya University is hosting a workshop on Cleft & Craniofacial Anomalies on the 24th, 25th and 26th of September 2010 in Mangalore. The event is supported by the German Cleft Children’s Aid Society (DCKH). A team of renowned surgeons and experts on clefts and craniofacial surgery will perform and debate on the latest trends in related surgery cum treatment.

Agra’ s Smile – Pooja

There is a very poor family in Idgha near Agra. Rajendra Kumar is a tricycle puller and Ramvati is house wife. They had 2 and then a child Pooja Singh, born on the 15th of August with a cleft lip & palate. After 4 years Ramwati expired due to some chronic illness. People say that after the birth of Pooja she went into depression on seeing her and always use to tell that God should either take her life or else her daughter’s life. They had no money to get her treated. Now the grandmother takes care of the 3 kids.

This family has no history of clefts. Pooja is the first child born with cleft lip and palate. She is not going to any school because of her cleft. Another reason is both her mother and father are illiterate. Hindi is her mother tongue. Family earning is just Rs. 1800 (30 Euro), but her father is an alcoholic and hardly gives the family any money. He didn’t even accompany her when she was operated for the first time. They have their own house consisting of two rooms, one over the other with 3 families staying. Pooja’s uncles cut leather in the same room.

Pooja was born in the government hospital .and her appearance was a shock to them as they didn’t have any clue of a cleft baby.Due to their dire situation, they did not consult any doctor and they lost hope on the child. There is one government hospital nearby but they were unable to help.
Pooja’s grandmother saw the publicity of our camp on the local television channel, and some neighbors saw it in the newspaper and brought them to our camp. In the camp they met the doctor for the first time and were treated well. Ever since, they have been grateful to the surgeon and Maaya Foundation.
When her grandmother was asked about how she felt after Pooja’s treatment, she was in tears and was all praise for the surgeon and the supporting society. Pooja’s father has now become hopeful of her future.
Pooja has a problem in speech is now undergoing speech therapy form Maaya Foundation. However, she is unable to attend the sessions regularly due to her grandmother’s illness. We have planed bone grafting, dental treatment and rhinoplasty at a later stage.

All this was possible due to the efforts of the surgeons and staff of Maaya Foundation.
